Daisies

Ideas

My first piece, titled "Daisies," is inspired by the 1970 Czechoslovakian film "Valerie and Her Week of Wonders." In the film Valerie looks down to see droplets of blood on the daisies she is walking through, realizing she had gotten her first period. The use of daisies represent the innocence of her girlhood, and the loss of this after getting her period and becoming a woman. Menstruation continues to be a taboo topic in almost every culture, and I want to cross that boundary by showing it bluntly as it is: bleeding.

Materials

I wanted to do something in color because I usually just use graphite, so I decided to color this piece with colored pencils.

Process

I started with just a field of daisies with blood droplets, then I got the idea to add the legs and feet.

Citation

My master artist for this piece is Sanja Ivekovic and my current artist is Sophie Jane (@littlenursegirl on Instagram).
